Parkinson Superwalk 2011

This is an important cause for me. I am emotionally attached as there is a very important person I hold dear to my heart who is living with this debilitating disease. I started doing the walk last year and raised just over $1200.00 with online pledges and door to door requesting in my neighbourhood. I would love to surpass last year's pledges and raise $1500- $2000.

If you can help out either by pledging me online or seeing me in person and make a pledge on paper, I would be happy and most appreciative for anything you can contribute. Every dollar goes toward research in finding a cure and provides assistance to those living with Parkinson's.

Parkinson's Superwalk 2011

Below is more information on what people affected by Parkinson's may be going through.

What is Parkinson's Disease?

Parkinson’s disease was first described by Dr. James Parkinson in 1817. Parkinson’s is a progressive brain disorder. Movement is normally controlled by dopamine, a chemical that carries signals between the nerves in the brain. When cells that normally produce dopamine die, the symptoms of Parkinson’s appear. Parkinson’s disease is not just a movement disorder. It is also characterized by a number of non-motor symptoms.

MOST COMMON SYMPTOMS  OTHER SYMPTOMS
  • Tremor
  • Slowness and stiffness
  • Impaired balance
  • Rigidity of the muscles
  • Fatigue
  • Soft speech
  • Problems with handwriting
  • Stooped posture
  • Constipation
  • Sleep disturbances

Currently there is no cure. You can live with Parkinson’s for years. The symptoms are treated with medication. Some people with Parkinson’s may benefit from surgery. The following therapies can also help manage the symptoms:
  • Physical therapy helps mobility, flexibility and balance
  • Occupational therapy helps with daily activities
  • Speech therapy helps with voice control
  • Exercise helps muscles and joints and improves overall health and well-being

Parkinson’s will worsen over time; however, each person with Parkinson’s is unique and may experience different symptoms and different rates of progression. As the disease progresses, non-motor symptoms may also appear, such as depression, difficulty swallowing, sexual problems or cognitive changes. Finding the right treatment as symptoms change over time is important and requires the expertise of specialized health-care professionals. It is important to find a doctor who is knowledgeable about Parkinson’s, ideally a neurologist. By working with a health-care team, a treatment plan can be created that will meet the person’s individual needs.

It's my blog and I can cry if I want to!

What a difference a car ride makes. In the past 4 days I've spent 24 hours in a car getting to where we needed to be. I've made some important reconnections with my husband and learned that I did not need facebook to fulfill whatever I was searching for there. I admit it was convenient to be in touch with family members and certain close friends. But I was discovering more and more that I was spending more time there and less time on household things. I am feeling a break is needed from the facebook world.

I started the blog again so I can get information or updates out there without feeling judged. Those that have been invited to follow and view the blog can opt to leave comments. I encourage readers to let me know what they think.
I hope you'll enjoy what you find here.

Blogging will be occuring more frequently and pictures will be added. Check back regularly if you would like to see my thoughts. It may not always make sense but they are my thoughts and it is my blog! You might even see some pictures from time to time...
I have no idea how long I'll continue with this blog thing... decisions can be made in a blink of an eye.

Cheers,
Elayne
